Torn
Paper Tutorial for PSP
|
Creating
a torn paper edge on paper is really quite easy. There
are just a few main points and a couple of tools to use
and with a few setting adjustments, you'll create the
edge you want in a few short minutes. The technique can
be used on tags and other paper-like elements as well.
This
tutorial was created using PSP v.9 but works similarly
in other versions.
First,
either create a paper or paste an already made paper or
on a NEW RASTER layer. [so
after creating or pasting you have 2 raster layers, one
blank and one with your paper - shown below.] Using the
freehand selection tool, draw across your paper where
you want the edge to tear. Continue the line around the
outside edge and connect your ending point with your starting
point. Clear that selection of the paper, leaving the
"marching ants".

|
|
Click
on raster layer 1, choose the PAINTBRUSH tool with a round
brush and white or a pale version of the paper color as
the foreground color. You're going to paint on the torn
area. Adjust your brush settings to your liking though choosing
a small size with a very soft edge gives the best effect.
Trace the "marching ants" from one edge of the
tear to the other. This doesn't have to be perfect or even,
just look torn.

|
Click
SELECTIONS on your top toolbar and INVERT. This will select
the opposite areas of the paper. Choose the BURN tool with
a small, soft, round brush with a very low opacity. Again,
trace the edge of the "marching ants" to slightly
darken the torn edge. [this step can be skipped if it's
not your preferential look] Remove the "marching ants"
by clicking on the selection tool and right clicking on
your canvas. |
|
|
Finally
create 2 dropshadows, one on each raster layer. You can
use these settings or alter them to your liking.
|
|
|
Finally,
merge your VISIBLE LAYERS and copy and paste onto your layout.
You can save your torn paper using the PNG OPTIMIZER to
preserve the transparent background for use again at a later
time. |
